The SAAB engine has knock sensors that work in conjunction with the ECU (computer), air/fuel mixture, and spark timing, to maximize engine power output. More power, more boost, more fuel.
Conversely when you use a lower octane fuel, the knock sensor directs the computer to make fuel/air mixture adjustments, and retards spark timing.
Less engine power, less boost, less fuel.
