I don't agree that a Saab will cost more to own then a Japanese car. Japanese cars have very few manufacturing faults, but they are underbuilt in some areas. Brakes for example, the 9-3 has a nice beefy set of brakes, I have 83K km on my car and there is still lots of pad left. A buddy of mine who has a 2000 Accord V6 has had a brake job already...I drove his car when it was new and immediately was unimpressed by the brakes. Japanese cooling systems are also known to be marginal. I have nothing against Japanese cars in fact I own one (my beloved 1990 Miata). My Saab has been pretty good so far, a few rattles, but Japanese cars have those to. Saab's also have a longer service interval.
