ethical and repair question Posted by rob [Email] ![]() ![]() |
i was driving down a country road at about 50mph a couple of weeks ago. it was night and in the middle of the road was a huge metal contraption that i hit dead center with my car. I would say it was 18" tall and fairly heavy welded steel. The thing exploded, pieces went every where and I pulled over the car to see what it was I hit, and if there were any tires still on my car. The car seemed to be in good shape, but some redneck came out of the house I was in front of and started asking me what happened. I picked up a piece of metal and saw it was a tripod-type bullseye to use for target practice, so I asked the guy if he knew why there was a target in the middle of his road. This guy became furious and came over and asked where his target was. I was like..... look around.... there are pieces of it everywhere. Then the guy proceeded to get upset that I hit his bullseye and destroyed it, he told me it must have fallen out of his truck.
Two weeks later there is oil under my car in the garage so I take it into the dealership and he tells me there is a hole in the oil pan and its going to be $750 to replace it. No, it can't be patched he tells me.
First of all..... can this be patched? Seems like aluminum could be patchde somehow, and since there was only a little oil coming out very slowly, it doesn't make sense that there is a huge hole there. I'll be checking it out later today. If it can't be patched, where would be a good source to get the part? The delear quoted me $265 for it.
Second question is do I have a reason to go back to the house where I hit this thing and ask for money to cover repairs? I could submit it to my insurance, but I think I have a $500 or $1000 deductible. Should I call the police? I need some help..... thanks!
Rob.
