I had a crack in a pan on my '96NG that just leaked slightly. The dealer replaced the entire pan (under warranty). I don't think these things can be patched, especially given that yours sounds like a big hole. There are some quick-fix materials sold for this, but they are of questionable reliability. As far as going back to the scene, I would forget it. Just remember to keep an open eye for tripods in the middle of the road.
