I posted a question for all you 9-3 owners a few months back and surprisingly got no response. My concern is the forward splash of water from the front right tire. Seems to me it could indeed take in a funnel-full of water if the speed and water depth were just right. That is, enough water being thrown forward and upward into the intake cavity. The stock airbox seems to have a partial design function for just that occurrence. By routing the air (water) to the rear of the box where, theoretically, the pressure is not as low as the forward part, it provides an opportunity for the water to disperse against the back and flow forward to the draining point in the bottom before ingesting too much liquid. This makes me question why there isn't some type of panel or direct splash guard near the intake, just something to disperse water away from the intake pipe.
I have modified my airbox by removing the stock pipe and clamping a funnel design to the front being very careful to keep the same clearance behind the front headlight/bumper area even though conventional wisdom seems to suggest a more open design. I have also installed an Amsoil two-stage foam air filter which, I feel, is a better safeguard than paper or gauze filters in terms of holding filtered media -both dirt and liquid.
All that being said, I live in a very wet climate and water ingestion is a very real possibility in the Saab 9-3.
I wonder what you guys/girls have experienced elsewhere and what, if any, considerations you have given to intake mods and sucking up water.
I'm sure you have already, but check your oil for evidence of water. One thing we can surely rule out is a wet distributor ;-)
Best of luck to you and let us know what the verdict is.
