I run my snows (Michelin Pilot Alpines, not as good as yours) at 43 psi: they cut through the snow and Ithaca Death slush and grab the pavement. I don't think you want to run them at low pressures in most winter road conditions, as they will float over the snow: this works fine on fresh powder, but not so well on the salty slush soup that gets made of most roads in short order.
As Bjurstrom pointed out, a RWD car going up hill has an advantage over our front-wheel ones, as the weight is being trasnferred over the driving wheels. I usually end up backing up my driveway for this reason.
For all you know, the BMW could have been running brand-new studded snows as well, or it could have been a 325 ix (all-wheel drive). I know they had a few years of those cars on the E-30 platform...
Best,
Lutfisk
