when you go uphill on a FWD drive, you shift the weight to the rear, effectively lightening the load on the traction (front) wheels. While the BMW is RWD, so when it goes uphill, the weight is shifted toward the rear drive wheels.
Next time, turn your TCS off, back your car up the hill, i.e. if you have to go only a short distance up. I also live up on a relatively steep road but not too far up so each time when I get stuck going up the right way, I just roll back down and back up the hill.
