Having owned both new and used cars, I also advocate going the used car route, especially when you can buy a car with remaining factory warranty. My loan payments are $230 a month on a 1999 SE HOT with 42K. Of course, I set aside extra money monthly for a "repair/maintenance fund", now that it's out of warranty, and I perform my own service (and document it in a log book). I plan on keeping this car for a long time, and it still looks and feels new (better than new actually, with the VRK, sport exhaust, and sundry other mods).
In addition to the lesser depreciation loss, and lack of mileage worries, with a little legwork (CARFAX, test-drives, trusted mechanic's examination), you can feel as confident about a used car's reliability as a new one. Any car purchase is a bit of a gamble, but if a well-serviced used car with full records doesn't have any blaring problems (stack of drag slips and speeding tickets in the glove-box, deer fur in the heating vents, Idiot's Guide to Head Replacement under the seat, etc.) you probably will be getting into a solid ride.
Best,
Lutfisk
