You are right costs are costs ... here are some that you failed to mention ...
What about the extra interest paid for the whole value of the car? A 16,000 residual value financed at 6% for 48 months costs you over $4,000.
The opportunity cost of making a larger payment can be high for those that have any high interest debt. The increased payment amount could be used to pay down higher interest debt instead of the low interest rate on the vehicle.
What about when leasing directly from the manufacturer (no middleman there)?
The "insurance" that you refer to as an added cost was an added benefit in my case. The capitalized price of the car was the same regardless of whether I leased or bought. The lease incentive plus the $6000 cap reduction I received when leasing made the SAAB lease more attractive than purchase ... period.
