When the ABS detects that the wheels are de-accelerating way to fast and differential wheel speeds suggest that slipping is occuring, the ABC takes over and you are acutally disconnected from the process unless you substantially unload the petal your self. When the ABS takes over, you can push harder on the petal but... you are disconnected. The softness may be something that you feel when the ABS takes over.
Wheel slip and ABS action on dry pavement with decent tires is quite unusual. However, when you hit the brakes very suddenly, the front of the vehicle can dive and the rear wheels are unloaded, unloaded to a greater degree than normal weight transfer while braking. This transient condition can trigger the ABS. So optimal braking technique is a still a smooth applicaation of the brakes... when conditions allow. A smooth application of the brakes can still be done quite rapidly. By avoiding a transient ABS event your stopping performance could be better than hitting the petal as hard and fast as you can.
And when buying tires in the future, remember that with a good braking system, braking is limited by the tires. Performance tires will stop you faster wet, cold, hot or dry compared to tires with harder tread compounds that are marketed to the segment of the public that seeks tires that last a long time. In places such as Kansas, Texas and other places with long summers and lots of 100F+ days, tires rapidly age harden and the grip of tires can make them unsafe well before they are worn down.
Everything sounds like it is working as it should.
