Why it's good to practice usine ABS..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Emergency Braking, RomanSaab, Wed, 2 Apr 2003 07:27:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When you brake hard enough to invoke the ABS it is quite noisy, the brake pedal chatters under your foot, and the tires go chirp-chirp-chirp as the wheels lock and unlock.
When American police first got cruisers with ABS in the 80's they would be involved in a high speed chase and the ABS would start doing it's thing and the unfamiliarty led them to beleive their brakes had broken or failed and they would break off the chase.
So it's important to be familiar with the behavior of ABS. I recommend a couple of panic stops from 100km. Jam the brake pedal on (after carefully re-checking the already emtpy road you've selected) as hard as you can and let it do it's thing. When you try it the second time, try steering gently too as in changing lanes. ABS can also stand for the Ability to Brake and Steer as the wheels not being locked, you retain steering control even in a violent panic stop.
