I have been a Saab owner for 15 years now and have certainly come across my share of mechanical mishaps. At the same time, my first Saab certainly saved my life (no joke) on a winter accident in the adirondack mountains.
Currently, my wife and I both drive 1999 9-3's and cannot be more pleased. I have had my 1999 9-3 SE HOT for a year (15k miles) while my wife has had her 1999 9-3 for 4 months (5k miles). Both 9-3's have around 65k miles on them. During the year that I have owned mine, I have replaced the rear anti-sway bar with an SAS unit, rear shocks with Bilsteins, fluids, filters etc. My wife's also has the SAS bar and fluids, filters, etc...
Things that we have noticed:
-my manual transmission needed to be replaced under warranty due to my having a tough time taking it out of 5th gear (5 spd manual)
-my wife's transmission needed three fluid changes to get to a red transmission fluid color from the black goo that was in the car when we got it.
-my wife's car needed to have the manual ventilation knob repaired per the TSB bulletin issues - we still don't like the way that the air temp knob works...
-my auto climate control display looses display graphic bars every once in while - but they always seem to come back after a day or two.
-the factory radios are OK - certainly not as good as are factory installed in some other cars
DI cassettes do fail - although changing and/or re-gapping the spark plugs every 15k will certainly reduce the risk of failure...The 1992 9000 2.3L Turbo that I had prior to this 9-3 had 170k miles on it - and I replace d the DI once - just to be safe...
Squeaks and rattles - we typically drive on nice roads in upstate NY - but end up going down to NYC every 6-8 weeks on my wifes car. The roads will certainly shake a car apart and produce all sorts of squeaks - so far, my wife's car has not exhibited any significant noises - mine is tight as well.
The 9-3's are great in the snow and are fun, safe cars to drive - overall, we are happy with both of ours and will certainly look at Saab for our next set of vehicles...
hope this helps and good luck!
