I sold my last VW in 2000 for a Viggen. My 1997 Jetta had 50K miles when I sold it and I couldn't tell you where the dealer was located. My family has owned 10 VWs across time and had nothing but great experiences. I have also been very lucky with my two Saabs. I had 2000 Viggen which I sold and a 2002 9-5 Aero. I haven't gone to the shop for anything on either of them. I am currently looking to purchase another Viggen. Saabs are generally reliable, but given my experience I feel VW and Saab are equally reliable.
That said I would get rid of that Golf!! Doesn't get worse than an issue every 1K!! Go Saab -- you won't regret it.
