I tend to politely disagree. I too am an old VW guy and also worked as a VW/Porsche mechanic many moons ago, as well as owning a dozen of so of both.
Comparing a VW to a SAAB is an apple to orange comparison. VW's are more simply designed and have fewer electronic/computer controlled components. This reason alone is what kept me a VW guy (still am to a degree) for all of those years, and I am not just talking about air-cooled VW's.
I now own a 99 Viggen that I love, but it has been in the shop for the last 2 weeks with a major engine problem. The Viggen is fantastic, and I now am in love with SAAB (this is my first), but I gotta tell ya I sure am glad I am not a SAAB mechanic. I wouldnt know where to begin.
Apples to oranges - VW for simplicity and a pretty good design, SAAB for all out class.
