You're right, if it never knocks, then the Trionic system won't limit you. But I'm not sure the correction is "gradual" the way you or I would define it. At only 1200 rpm you're already getting 80 sparks per second, or 20 "knock detection/correction events" per second per cylinder. How many "knock detection/correction events" does T7 span to make a "gradual" correction? 5? 10? 100? I sure don't know. But I'm guessing "gradual" happens a lot faster for T7 than it does for us. And is T5's detection/correction handled the same way? Again, I don't know.
I think Saab actually set the minimum octane rating at the lowest point that the Trionic system can compensate for it under normal driving conditions. I'm guessing that's why they have both a "minimum" & a (different) "recommended" rating.
In my '90 N/A C900, I can still notice incipient knock with premium 91 octane, but only from a standing start in heavy traffic on the hottest days. (It's got a separate knock sensor mounted in the engine block.) With my '99 9-3, I've never noticed incipient knock under any conditions, even with mid-grade 87 octane. And I'm not willing to try 85 octane just to find out what it does. :-)
