I'm now coming up to a month of driving an 00 9-3 (base, 5dr, 5sp) and enjoying this fine board. I'm still learning how to nestle up to the car, but -- bar any unfortunate events -- I have no doubt we're going to enjoy a lovely, long-term relationship.

I have a number of questions, some of which I realize have been recently addressed here, but I'm having trouble getting my little brain wrapped around a few things. In part because this is a very different driving experience for me. My previous and current other vehicles are: 78 Rabbit, 92 Mazda 323 SE, 86 Ranger (2.0 carbed 4), 76 MGB, 74 MG BGT. The 323 is what I just replaced, with the Rabbit being its predecessor, and the last three in the list are all active as alternative use/mood vehicles. So I'm dealing with a technology boost that makes me dizzy, though I did have power steering on the 323 <g>. Anyhow...

1) Warming up before letting turbo kick in: Yes, there was a thread about this on Wednesday. My problem is that hitting turbo in 2nd as I pull out, esp. since my daily drive starts out uphill, seems pretty natural. OK, I am a bit of a leadfoot. Should I really be so gentle as to keep out of the yellow when starting out? The manual talks only generally about warming up before pushing the car. Maybe if I understood turbos a bit more I'd feel better. I have gathered that one wants nice warm oil flowing through.

2) Shifting: Still struggling here. Seems like I have to keep clutch in on first till really rolling, which I can deal with if that's how things are meant to be. But going up into the others seems finicky and notchy, esp. second. Is this just a matter of acclimation? (Though I am used to having to really yank the shifter in my truck, and to working around a bad 2nd synchro in the BGT.) Or would switching to the MTF0063 tranny fluid help? Should I lean on a dealer to install the full transmission upgrade? (Still have warranty till next spring, but will have to drive an hour for a dealer.) Also, setting aside the "recommendations" of the Shift Up light and its apparent desire to never see the car stay in fourth, where do people run this car? Closer to 2K than 3?

3) Octane: Another topic I've seen recently here, and octane is always surrounded by religion. The manual explicitly states that the 185hp engine has been optimized for 90, so my inclination would be to go with mid-grade.

4) Splitting rear seatback: I can't get this to work. The lever doesn't seem to unlatch the seatback; the little warning button doesn't pop up. Is there some trick I'm missing? Or should I have it looked at?

5) The pedals: They are close together, aren't they? Noticed this the other day when I had some heavier shoes on. Snow boots will be interesting, though I only wear them when absolutely necessary. While I'm still futzing around with all the adjustments, I feel like I keep winding up with the soles of my feet on the pedals when I'd rather be just hitting them with just toe and ball.

5) Winter tires: Do people run snows on this car? I'm in Upstate NY, where we have weather. On my 323, I did 175 all-seasons in summer but 155 snows for the other six months. On the car now are new Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s -- not a superpremium tire but actually seem pretty decent, including on wet road.

6) MBC: Could someone tell me what this stands for? Seems to be some sort of upgrade?? Not knowing is marring my reading pleasure <g>.

Please, please understand, this isn't meant to be a trash or a whine. I loved this car the minute I stepped into it, and was enchanted once we were rolling. I'm just looking to increase the quality of our relationship.

Thanks! - Tom
