I am having trouble with this.
If the DI fails totally, the cat can not be affected.
For the cat to be affected the engine must be running while some fuel/air is not getting ignited by the DI. So we are talking about a partial DI failure.
If the DI starts failing to ignite the fuel charges to some extent, intermittent or failure on on cylinder, I expect that there will be a CEL for the ignition failure and CEL for the O2 sensors freaking out. So I am assuming that folks are driving with rough running and CEL's for damage to occur. Can anyone speak to that?
For the CAT to overheat there needs to be fuel and air. The front O2 sensor will see the high oxygen content. The sensor after the cat might get a normal reading if all the fuel and air combine, and yes that would get very hot. If the cat melts down, the rear sensor will have problems too.
