Firstly there is no relationship between the old 9-3 and 9-5 audio systems and the 9-3 SS audio system. No WB either in the new car sadly, though it does have RDS.
Secondly, the major complaint about the 9-3 SS is the fact that the rear speakers seem so puny in sound and bass. This complaint comes from people who have either never been to a concert or never auditioned the sound system in some higher end cars. I stems from the fact that Saab engineers put a lot of effort to get the sound stage biased to the front of the car and centered nicely with the mid dash speaker. So no matter how hard you try you can't get a lot of volume out from the rears, which is how everyone is used to listening to their music pumping, just like all the ricers.
Among many things I've done in life are two summers as a recording engineer at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver. The 9-3 SS audio system is well proportioned and well balanced and set up the way home audiophiles would do things. Where is suffers is the quality of the paper cone speakers, but there are lots of replacements on the markets. I used the green cone Infinity Kappas pulled from my the '00 9-3 that I returned after the lease and I'm very happy with the 9-3 SS setup.
Wish they had kept the WB though. I really miss it.

P.S. What ever happened to the days when the dealer would take/send you for a test drive with teh stereo blaring ? It was the oldest trick in the book to make sure you didn't hear all the rattles in the car. But at least you learned how 'good' (i.e. loud) the stereo was. Surely people stil audition their car's stereo system too, given the amount of emphasis placed on this board on how apparently bad it is ?
