I'm coming up on my six month anniversay with a 9-3SS Linear. This is the third SAAB in our household (two 9-5's, which are wonderful automobiles), but it will be the last. Livng with the 9-3SS I've become painfully aware that it just doesn't have the aura of a quality European car ... and I know the reason, for fundamentally it is a badge-engineered off-the-shelf GM car (and we all know that "GM" is synonymous with "low quality").
Lately I've taken to calling it "my SAAturn."
If you put a blindfold on someone, sat them in a 9-3SS, turned on the stereo and told them that they were listening to music while sitting in a base Chevy Cavalier they'd respond "Yeah, it sound like it -- cheap, tinny sound!"
If you moved them around a bit, put them back in the 9-3SS (after removing the SAAB logos) and told them that they were sitting in a $15,000 Saturn, they'd respond, "Yeah, the interior, especially the dash, has that cheap plastic GM look to it."
The 9-3SS proves that you can't force even the best engineers (of which SAAB is blessed) to take "sow's ear" GM components and expect them to produce a "silk purse" automobile. Unfortunately, the 9-3SS shows the direction SAAB is heading. The upcoming SAAB SUV is going to be built off of a Chevy Trailblazer. No doubt the next generation 9-5 will also be built off of some GM product.
Too bad. The 9-5 showed that SAAB could build a great car when they were given the resources. But when they're forced to use crappy components the end result is going to be crappy.
