I bought from a dealer in Dallas that deals in Swedish cars a few months ago. I was being very specific on the year, options, color, etc. so I didn't give myself many choices. They worked with the local Dallas Saab dealer to get the car ready for me by doing the 30,000 maintenance and having Saab check it out for warranty repairs, turns out I got a new power seat switch and ignition switch. On the contrary to what Mike said in his post about these being the "leftover" Saabs that dealers didn't take at auction, they are in no way inferior to a dealer's selection. There are so many 2000 9-3s coming off lease right now that dealers alone cannot sell them all. Dealers benefit more from new car sales and their used car sections of their lots prove it. Just make sure that your dealer gets the car serviced by Saab before you buy it and get a copy of the warranty records and service history. In Houston the service guy said that I could not get the service history but he printed out the warranty repairs for me. Make sure you confirm the warranty date with Saab as well. All you need to do is take the VIN to any dealer and they can pull it up. My dealer told me the warranty was up in Jan 04 when it is actually up in June 04, a pleasant surprise for me.

Now we get to extended warranty...In my opinion it's a waste of money. You will purchase the extended warranty at time of purchase of the car and be paying for it while you have the current factory warranty, not economical. In addition you will pay interest on the warranty as well as paying it over the life of the loan, which is probably greater than the 2 years your warranty will last. In addition, you are usually only buying 2 years or 50,000 additional miles (100,000 total) on the car over the factory warranty. On a low mileage (~30,000) car this does not make sense unless you plan on hitting near 100,000 miles in two years. You have nearly a full year of factory warranty to evaluate the car to see if it is worth the extra $$$$ for the extension, which the answer is probably no. Remember, with an extended warranty you are placing a bet that something will fail, and most importantly it is something that is covered. You are also betting that at least $2000 of warranty related repairs will be made in two years to get the full benefit of your investment, don't forget about the interest you pay on the warranty payments either for around 4-5 years for which you only get 2 to use. Personally I would gamble my $2000 that nothing will go wrong and have the extra money if something goes wrong. If nothing goes wrong then I save my $2000 for standard repairs or upgrades. Consider the DI cassette, if (more like when) it fails would you rather pay $2000 or $300 for the part? What I do is put the extra cash that the warranty would charge me into a "car" account for repairs, and when warranty is out I'll buy a spare DI cassette (still only $300 vs. $2000). It will grow about $1000 per year, so a total of $2000 for two years just like your warranty company charges, and no finance charges associated with the car loan!!! Plus YOU make the interest on the money. Save your money on your own!!!

I am now off my soapbox, hopefully this enlightens you. I know I'm speculating a bit here and your personal circumstances may vary.

Eric
