Read a few of the other posts. I am a Saab dealer tech and have done a couple of these for the 15K service.
First, this is not your father's Saab. It does not have a 13 mm hex head drain plug (15mm, I think. I will have to check tomorrow to be sure). There is no copper drain plug gasket. A silicon/rubber formed o-ring that fits in the a groove on the drain plug washer is used instead. It can be reused as long as there is no sign of damage. The oil filter is a cartridge style that is accessed from the top of the car after the front engine trim cover is removed.
Procedure to change is not that bad.
1. Access the bottom of the car to get to the oil drain plug. Either crawl under the car, put it up on jack stands, ramp or a lift. Follow all safety instructions if you raise the car off its wheels.
2. Make sure you have a large drain pan to catch the 6 quarts of oil you are about to dump when you remove the drain plug. Use a high quality 6 point socket ie Snap-0n, Mac, Matco, SK etc. Do not use the $6.00 socket set from K-mart or the flea market. Also be careful if the engine is hot as the oil will also be hot. Remove the drain plug by turning it in a counter-clockwise rotation (left). Allow the oil to drain until it drips very slow. Inspect the o-ring for tears or other damage, replace if needed. Reinstall the drain plug by turning clockwise (right). Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey.
3. Remove the front engine trim (black plastic) by removing the 4? T-30 torx screws securing it to the valve cover and pulling it away. The oil filter cap is on the driver's side under the intake mainifold. It is made of black plastic and has a 32mm hex head on the top. Saab has a special tool for this job. It is a very short 32mm socket made by Hazet. I use the tool with a wobble extension as the filter housing is not a straight shot due to the intake mainifold. Remove the housing by turning counter-clockwise(left) and remove from the engine. Replace the cartridge, clean and lube the o-rings and reistall in the engine. Tighten by turning clockwise (right). Clean the area with brake clean or other solvent. Reinstall the engine trim cover.
4. Remove Oil cap and fill with 6 quarts of Saab Full Synthetic oil. It you want to use a different brand, make sure it is listed in your owners manual.
5. Start the car and let it run for a few minutes. Make sure oil is not runing out from underneath the car. Shut off the engine and let is set for a few minutes. Check the oil level and adjust as needed.
6. You are done.
As far as resetting the oil quality and date. You can't reset it now unless you have a TechII AND a computer with TIS and registered hardware key. Saab recommends the first oil change at about 15K or sooner if the SID indicates an oil quaility less than 5%. At this point the "Time for Service" message will come on. You will now be able to reset the Time for Service message at about 14.4K miles.
Good luck, hope this helps,
