will act as a "current vacuum" until it builds some charge. Depending on the strength of the jumper cables and how well you make your connection, it can take a few minutes before the dead battery has enough charge in it to allow a start. Hence the "clicking" even though there was enough power available to allow the electronics to boot up.
Sounds like there was a parasitic current drain.
