When I decieded to do the exhaust a few years ago, my local dealer in Pasadena told me the sports exhaust had been discontinued. So, I had mine for the '96 900SET made at a local muffler shop. It is stainless from the flex-pipe back, with the quietest Magnaflow center resonator and rear muffler they had. Even so, I thought it was bit too loud (maybe a tad ricey) from inside the car. When I discovered this board soon after that, and learned that the Saab part was still in production, I regretted immediately not going with the Saab sports exhaust. That said, I've never heard one in person, so who knows? Now that my son is driving it, and I often hear it coming up the hill toward our house, it seems mellower.
Not at all like my half-race Datsun 510 with "Thrush" glass packs, back in the early 1970s!
On my "new" '02 9-3SE, I think the exhause sound is a little more interesting than the stock '96 was. With the boost needle deep in the red (thank you BSR) the sound is actually pretty nice. So, I don't see any pressing reason to change it until the stock system needs replacing.
Also, both of mine are chipped automatics, so at some point enough torque is probably enough. That said, improving breathing - intake and exhaust - seems to be always a good thing.
/Geoff
