Saab actually designed the oil plug to have a smaller head size (13mm) and to be a soft steel alloy to try to prevent overtightening the oil plug and thereby cracking the aluminum oil pan.
The oil plug will last a very long time and not leak if a 13mm or 1/2" 6-point socket is used (as you stated), the cooper washer is replaced at each oil change, and the oil plug is torqued to be just snug (20 ft-lbs).
The use of a an oil plug with a built-in valve is a one option, I am using an oil plug with a super strong built-in magnet myself.
As a former design engineer, I just wanted to set the record straight that the current oil plug design is really there for a reason, even if it doesn't always work. :o)
