In fact, Saab shipped Model Year 2001 and 2002 9-3 with 205/55-16 tires.
I have used 205/55-16 on my 1998 900SET for several thousand miles with no problems. Like you, I found their to be many more choices of all-season tires in the 205/55-16 size. There is a theorectical loss of handling with the 205/55-16 verses the 205/50-16 size. There is probably more handling difference between different makes and models of tires than there is between the two sizes.
The 205/55-16 do ride a bit softer/better due to the slightly taller sidewall. That same slightly taller sidewall also makes a in the speedometer reading. If your speedometer was perfectly accurate with 205/50-16 tires (not likely), and you switched to 205/55-16 tires, the speedometer would read about 3% less than actual vehicle speed. So at an indeicated 60 MPH on the speedometer you would actually be traveling about 62 MPH.
I rently put on a set of Pirelli P-Zero Nero M&S in 205/55-16. This particular tire has gotten very good reviews and is around $130 each mounted and balanced. Other good choices would be the Contiental ContiExtremeContact, Bridgestone RE950, Yokohama Avid V4, and the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (also very expensive).
