I just bought a 2001 Viggen this summer in LA, then drove it up the ALCAN to Alaska. It's my only transportation at this point. Before this, I owned a 2000 9-3 and a 1986 900S. Ok, down to business:
With the lowered chassis and 17" wheels, the ride is a bit rough. Of course the trade-off is super tight handling, which is VERY dependent on tires, alignment and wear level of the suspension components.
With 235HP and a super-flat torque curve starting at about 2500RPM, the Viggen motor is just plain wicked-sick in the power department. However, you'll only get that level if you use 92 octane gas, keep the plugs gapped right, keep an eye on carbon deposits, and drive aggressively to keep the computer up to par on what boost levels and such that it can safely give the engine. You also have to get the RPMs up over 4k if you want to have all that power available at a moments notice.
The front air dam is LOW. If you forget it is there just once, you'll be very sorry.
Some other notes:
2001 added On-Star and Traction control as standard equipment. For me, living in Alaska, it was very important to have those features.
The Saab certified used program is great. I'd look for a Viggen that is certified. You'll get bumper to bumper warranty coverage for 100,000 miles or 6 years from the original purchase date. This includes free towing to the nearest dealer! If you find a Saab you like, but it is not certified, a dealer can get it certified for about $1,500.00. You or the seller would have to pay for the certification.
So basically I would say the Viggen has to be wanted very badly for its strong points. Otherwise, the weak points will make you disappointed in no time. I'm super happy with mine, but if you read these forums you'll see a few unhappy Viggen owners. I think they had the wrong motives for purchasing the car in the first place...
