i've been struggling with a steering issue on my '99 9-3 for about 10 months now. basically, the steering feels soft and sloppy. gentle turns of the wheel are responsive, but harder jerks give almost no response. it is as if the power steering has lost its pressure (feels over-assisted). And to make matters worse, it is inconsistent. Sometimes it will be tolerable: justly slight soft. And sometime it even suddenly firms up (I can always tell b/c a slight shimmy stops). But 90% of the time it sucks Ð so soft that the wheel jolts from road defects (the same ones it used to take with a steady DU-DUUH! I also seem to have a tremendous amount of torque steer (from the line, and on power turns). at higher speeds it is also hard to keep the car steady Ð especially if the road has and left-to right undulation.

mechanics canÕt seem to find anything wrong, with each suggesting something or saying "nothing is wrong Ð all cars feel different" I now have two indys and one dealer that now suggesting replacing the rack.. ..

here is what i've done so far:
1. new transmission mount
2. new tires (Michelin XGTs)
3. many, many alignments and wheel balancings
4. new power steering pump
5. new sachs struts and rear bilstien shocks
6. MP performance rack clamp and brace

has anyone else encountered a similar problem? could this be related to the rack? is it worth spending the $900+?

i really hate driving the car as i only drive long distances (120 miles every friday and sunday) -- and its too bad becuase i used to love this car. i suppose that is why i've hung in there for so longÉ but i'm at the end of my rope.

emotional support accepted too!
