Problem with CD-Rs in in-dash player

I've got a 2000 9-3, with both an in-dash CD player and a CD changer in the trunk. I've got lots of CD-Rs that I've burned over the years (using various brands of media), and every one of them always plays perfectly in the changer. However, with the in-dash player, sometimes I get lots of pops and dropouts when playing CD-Rs. Other times, the exact same discs have absolutely no problems. The only thing I can think of that might be responsible for the different behavior is that the entire in-dash player gets extremely warm when used for extended periods, although I have not been able to induce the problem intentionally just by letting the player run for a long time.
Anybody else experience a similar problem?
Any ideas how to fix it?
