Recently was in the path of a significant snow and ice storm in Cincy. Wanted to let you know that 99 9-3 with 17" Pirelli P-Zero-Nero Ultra High Performance All Seasons performed admirably in adverse conditions where effective plowing, sanding and salting were non-existent or spotty at best. Even on the wagon wheel rutted cow path that I 74 between Cincinnati and Indianapolis where upwards of 2' of snow fell, the car kicked butt in the snow covered high speed lane. Only problems occurred when I tried to exit a parking lot through 1' high snow and in the parking lot for my corporate apartment where the spaces were icy and not plowed.
I passed at least 35 abandoned cars and 2 dozen abandoned semis which got stuck on the icy hills of Southeastern Indiana. I lucked out when I avoided I-64 as I understand semis blocked the road completely over the "nobs" (good sized hills) on that road between Louisville Ky and Evansville, IN.
Let me put it this way, the SAAB tore it up better than most of the 4 wheel drive vehicles I was passing. The pavement was not visible in either lane for nearly 60 miles. On Thursday, I had to turn back due to a line of traffice moving at 5 mph that was 35 miles long (Its 110 miles from Cincy to Indy and I did not wish to learn how many miles I could drive on 17 gallon tank at 5 mph with the ambient air temperature hovering around 20 degrees F. The next day I left Cincy at 5:00 AM to light traffic and an ambient air temperature of negative 10 degreees Faireneheit which is as we say back in Rhode Island, "thats wicked cold" Anyway, the car's defroster ran beautifully and the despite the extreme cold and the chuck or ice and frozen wagon ruts, the car took a beating and performed remarkedly. I did have to clear the frozen ice our of my rims as this was causing significant vibraiton over 40 mph.
Simply amazing performace from the SAAB which handled impeccably in some of the worst conditions I have ever seen on an interstate highway. The head of the IN DOT should resign before he/she gets fired for unpreparedness and ineptitude. People's lives were put at risk because the IN DOT was ill trained, unprepared and inadequately equipped to handle a major snow event which simply required the relocation of IN DOT equipment assets (pre-positioning)to keep the roads open.
