. . . "Only morons in Florida and Southern California drive these things." Alaska is chuck full of awl tychoons from Texas, Oklahoma, Venezuela and Scotland who are scared spitless about driving here that they invest heavily with their well-earnen dollars into the biggest scariest SUV they can find. And they've never driven in snow. They have so much money to put into these death traps but figure from talking with all their other good ole boys that they do not need good winter tires, much less studded ones.
With an average annual temperature of 35°F, we have yearly one frozen day for one unfrozen, roughly. The grounds freezes down to various depths of up to 10 feet, so whatever precipitation we get stays frozen on the ground. Cars merely pack it into high density ice. And for about 3 months of the year, the full sunshine is not even warm on your face.
Yes after every snow storm, many of these "Snow Underequipped Vehicles" lie upside down like dead beetles in the medians for the next plow to cover with the latest fall. Humorous & sad at the same time.
I've driven only Saabs since I arrived here in 1981 and they have performed remarkably well. But they are useless without good or great snow tires. I also am a big propnent of narrow snow tires.
Good luck in your next storm and "blast by" carefully. We need all the intelligent drivers we can get.
