I own a '61 Triumph TR3A with a 2.1 L four. The TR2, TR3, TR3A, TR3B, TR4, and TR4A all used the same four cylinder engine which was originally derived from a 1930's Ferguson Tractor engine. The TR5/TR250 and TR6 used a straight six. The TR7 used a Rover (I believe) derived four - it was definitely not the old four from the earlier TR's. The Stag was a V8 only and used the small block aluminum V8 originally designed by Buick in the 60's and later used by various British car makers - Rover, Land Rover, Triumph, Sterling, etc. The Buick derived aluminum V8 was in use as recently as the last generation of the Range Rover in highly modified form.
The Four cylinder shared by SAAB and Triumph was designed by the famous English engine design firm of Ricardo. I believe that Standard/Triumph used this engine in the Dolomite and some other sedan/saloon automobiles but never used it in their sports cars. I may be mistaken in this - I will look back through some of my Triumph history books.
