I read something many years ago in Road&Track about the effects of octane on fuel mileage. Basically it came down to: to get the best mileage and the most power, you have to develop the maximum pressure in the cylinders at about 12 degrees ATDC (After Top Dead Center). Lower octane requires the ignition timing to be retarded so the max pressure is reached too late to get the most out of the gas. Higher octane gas gets you closer to the optimum point and hence get you better mileage.
The only experience I had on this was on a Fiat X1/9 my wife once owned. On premium with the timing advanced to just barely audible knocking it got 36.5 MPG on her on her 80 mi. round trip to work. On regular with the timing set the same way, it got 33.5 MPG. While she had that job, I kept it on premium as that was 4 round trips as opposed to 3. However it was slightly cheaper to burn regular and when she got transfered to a much closer job, I converted it back to 89 octane.
