Mine was broken at 62k....... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Motor Mounts going out at 50K?, Peter ![]() ![]() |
My old 1996 900SET (very similar to 9-3) had a broken motor mount when I got it at 62k. It had an awful clunk when the motor shifted, but otherwise ran and drove fine.
S type Saturns, for example, are notorious for bad motor mounts, the top torque axis mounts need replacing every 30k or so, or you get used to the idle vibration.
Saabs don't have motor mount issues, generally, but that doesn't mean yours didn't go bad. Sometimes a misguided jack can lift the engine incorrectly or perhaps a bad pothole or other obstacle broke a mount.
Bad motor mounts can cause excessive vibration and often some serious clunking like when shifting from reverse to forward gear, but I don't see a tie in with axle issues. Axle issues are caused by CV joints, strut bearings, and control arm bushings.
If your mechanic is feeding you a line try another mechanic or get a better explination. Is he fishing for a cure or does he know for a fact motor mounts will fix it?
