DOT 4 is almost identical to DOT 3 except DOT 4 has to meet higher "dry" and "wet" boiling points. "dry" = straight from the bottle; "wet" = measured with 3.7% water by volume (both DOT 3 & DOT 4 brake fluids absorb moisture which is why they should be changed every 2 years).
Minimum Specifications For DOT 3 & DOT 4:
DOT 3 - 205 Deg C/401 Deg F "dry" boiling point; 140 Deg C/284 Deg F "wet" boiling point
DOT 4 - 230 Deg C/446 Deg F "dry" boiling point; 155 Deg C/ 311 Deg F "wet" boiling point
So DOT 4 is better than DOT 3; bottom line = Use DOT 4 unless you have no other choice, then use DOT 3 and flush with DOT 4 as soon as practical.
