Well the first half anyway, they bought the whole thing in the late 90's. GM has a long standing interest in Saab, but if anything the quality and performance have gotten better of late. Most folks on the 9-3SS board seem to be really big fans of their cars. There's actually lot less "whining" about driving and mechanical issues than with the "OG9-3". One of the biggest issues seems to be iPod integration- hardly a deal breaker. There were some early computer problems in '03, but that's all cleared up by now.
Short version: The almost universal opinion of 9-3SS owners is that they prefer them to NG900s or OG9-3s. If you're really concerned about the space wait on the sweet new SportCombi coming in the fall.
