Need idler pulley help!

I just got stranded in Stowe, VT for a few hours after my idler pulley snapped off and my serp. belt shredded. Unfortunately my car is still in Stowe, and I'm back home 45 minutes away. I had it towed to one of the few garages in town. I got a real bad vibe from the guy at there, and I just know he is going to try and take me for as much as he can. The thing that pisses me off is that i know I can DIY this problem.
I searched the board and found a lot on this subject already. I have a '99 so I think I can do the "short belt" fix that I read about. This sounds like the cheapest way to go, so how should I go about telling the mechanic that this is what I want done? Obviously he is going to want to perform the most expensive repair, but I need to let him know that I know it can be done in less than an hour with $50 in parts. Lucky for me I have Saabnet on my side!
If anyone has any experiences with this problem, please share them with me. I really can't afford an expensive repair bill right now. I thought I was safe driving around with a $300 DI cassette in my trunk. Guess I shouldn't tempt fate like that.
Thanks,
Tim
