First there's the ignition immobilizer. I haven't dismantled our Saab key yet, but our Honda has a small chip that returns a coded signal. It's picked up by some kind of antenna around the ignition cylinder. Without the proper signal the starter will crank but the ECU won't fire the spark or injectors.
The remote-unlocking transmitter is separate from that other chip.
BOTH of these transmitters/transponders send a code. The car has to recognize the code & either accept it or not. Think about it... How do you program the key itself?? The TECH-2 plugs into the car, not into the key.
Apparantly you can't actually ADD a key. You have to clear the current list of authorized keys, then add each one back in. I sorta remember there's a maximum of 4. If you press the lock/unlock button while the car's turned on, the SID will display how many keys are presently on the 'approved' list.
