Can of worms......Pain in the..........(long) Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Obtaining Service History from Dealers, dcrocker, Fri, 18 Feb 2005 05:59:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I can understand why dealers are reluctant to run service histories. Often it opens a can of worms, that is, it results in more questions, explinations and bewilderment, and service folks don't get paid for the free advice. Often customers ask to run histories on cars that the dealer doesn't own. Other times the customer wants to see the service history on a car the dealer is selling, and that can be a can of worms when unflattering, but often normal stuff appears.
I put myself out there on SaabNet as being able to run service histories, and I wish I hadn't. It's a pain in the ass, even the the folks who try and make it easy wind up with repeated questions and concerns.
Inevitably analytical folks, like those on SaabNet, become service hypocondriacs when presented with a service history. "Well whatta'bout this, and do you think this should be normal? And I thought this was a good car and now I'm not so sure" and on and on and on. As I said, it opens a can of worms.
There are a couple of incorrect things being said about Saab service histories on this BB. Let me set the record straight.
Service histories as they are called are really just histories of warranty work, except that beginning in 2001, free service was a warranty thing and shows in the history.
There is no customer info on a Saab service history. It's officially a Warranty Inquiry by Chassis and no customer info is related. That doesn't stop dealers from citing privacy concerns as an issue for not sharing the info. Who really has the right to know what you had done to your car? What's in the Warrany Iquiry can materially affect the value. So a dealer that shares service info could be construed as liable for a diminished value because a car had too many warranty repairs. And like I said it's a pain, so many dealers just say no based on legitimate privacy concerns.
Warranty Inquiries are on the Saab national data base. Where ever warranty work, or free maintenance, was done is listed by dealer code, date and repair in the history. It's a stretch, but someone could track your whereabouts by your service history, well you get the idea.
