Similar accident (less frame damage), DYI'ed in '02 > Posted by Nicholas [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Does this Viggen look salvageable?, Jamie, Tue, 15 Mar 2005 08:18:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi sorry to hear about your mishap, been in a similar straight a couple years ago so I say wholeheartedly good luck with the rebuild. My advice for a diy/ low cost approach is to source all your parts at the cheapest price and do all repair that you can do successfully. At least some reassembly. Contract out only what you can't do (alignment, straightening, paint{?}), and beer and pizza go ALONG way for both your mechanics and you when you are at it in the garage.
It cost me $2700 to rebuild my 1997 900SE. I rearended a SUV at a Yield sign at 10 mph. My lights and radiator and A/C equip was lined up with her bumper. My bumper cover was toast from her tailpipe.
I fixed over 2 weeks in my garage after high school maybe avg. 2/3 nights a week, 2/3 hours a night. I bought a bumper cover, Rad Support cross member at a local shop and had it welded in, painted and frame checked by local shop for 1705$, beer, pizza and finding the younger guy with the motorcycle who worked there. The frame was still straight, just crumple damage at hoodline and A/C Rad. Hood was able to be straightened by me and my strongarm Marc Sylvester(on the boards), but wore a hood bra for the rest of her days. I bought my parts from eeuroparts.com or even better at the junkyard!
For tools you'll need a toolbox, and ANOTHER vehicle to drive around in (for fetching parts, beer, pizza), don't underestimate the inconvienence of the loss of the exhirilating 2nd and 3rd gear of your Viggen : ) .
The most important tool in my toolbox was:
1)http://www.SAABnet.com
2)TORX bits
3)eye protection (tie)
3)Full metric ratchet set, extensions
4)Rubber Mallet (tie)
4) todd at Eeuroparts.com
5)a 50 pc Screwdriver/socket set i bought at home depot for 12$
6)the phone for junkyards
7)pizza
8)Haynes, (seriously, it was good though)
9)Old blanket for the concrete.
I couldn't buy beer at the time, but that might help to a point, but hinder after that.
Well goodluck Jamie, I hope sharing this may help you asses the best course of action.
Just remember not to get in over your ahead and remeber that the Viggen, nice color btw, has to be safe and drive true when finished if you are dealing with frame, susp. damage.
