My engine blew because of a cracked piston, too. I had 57,000 miles on it when it happened and Saab wouldn't do anything to help. BTW, we've had eight Saabs in my immediate family alone, so you can imagine how pissed I was when they wouldn't help; I'll never buy another, nor will anyone in my family. Screw you, GM.

Anyway, Saab is in fact having a problem with their B235R engines preigniting and then cracking pistons. I've got pictures of my engine around somewhere, if I can find them I'll post them. Maybe we should look into organizing a class action law suit? As of April 22, 2004 when mine blew, Saab already knew of 38 Viggens which had suffered the same fate. They used different pistons in the 1999, 2000, and 2001 model years - good Mahle pistons, too. 2000 had the most failures, and that's what year mine was.

Before mine actually "blew", it coughed one night as I dropped the hammer in fourth. It hesitated and the check engine light flashed for about 10 seconds. I had no idea what it meant and brought it to the Saab dealer (Saab Nashua North in Merrimack, NH - basically an organized crime outfit) and they told me it was probably nothing.

Anyway, good luck with getting Saab to front the repair costs, or even to acknowledge that there's anything wrong with their products. Let me know if you do.

Thanks,

Jamie
