The new (black) DI's seem to fail earlier and more randomly than the older (red) ones. If you put the same failure prone part into the car, it is as likely to fail as the old one.
This is the first I have heard of a software upgrade for the red DI, that is good information.
Reliability is not a function of the number of cylinders. Personally I feel the 4-cyl is a good, engine, similar to what Saab used for years. The problem is with early failures in other systems - idler pulleys, DI, fuel pump (all can leave you stranded), electric seats, SID, heater fan, etc. are just annoying.
Most of these issues go back to 1994, they are not new on the 9-3 models. The best thing we can do is help other people so they have the information to fix or prevent the same problems and just enjoy driving their car...
