I am all for making what will sell. The Sport Combi is a nice car and if that is what Saab needs to keep up with other sport sedans, I am all for it.
When it comes to cars, niche models do not usually do so well over time.
Unfortunately you can't sell engineering and a lot of good designs get lost in the shuffle. I have just about given up on seeing a Saab variable compression engine in a real car.
You will note that it produced 225 hp out of a mere 1.6L and ran with a max boost of 40 psi, with a volumetric efficiency and maximum compression that even modified cars do not usually reach. It was 30% more efficient than a typical 1.6L at steady speeds, and produced as much power as a 3.0L V6 under maximum boost.
On the positive (pun intended) side, we can't blame GM for that. Once the push for gas/electric cars started, making an efficient gasoline-powered car will not make you many friends in Washington or any EU capital. The one thing the car industry has learned well by now is that you cannot buck the government.
(I know, you guessed this was going to be a rant)
