Do it at least three times in a short period.

If the stuff that is in there looks bad, get a case of non-synthetic ATF.
Drain, refill, drive a few miles to mix, and repeat the operation a few more times. By that time the fluid should look decent.
If you want to use synthetic, great--I've been using AMSOIL ATF in my Saabs since it came on the market. If the fluid looks good, then use the AMSOIL for at least 3 drain and refills. If the fluid looks bad now, use the non-synthetic first, then the synthetic.
Will cost you about $15-20 plus some time to do the non-synthetic. Will cost about $95 retail for a case of 12 qts of AMSOIL, or about $70 dealer/preferred customer cost. Pricey? Maybe--when I looked on the shelf of an auto parts store the other day, they had Mobil 1 ATF at $8 a qt.
But what is the cost to have a new tranny installed?
