I better thank Eeuroparts for the pictures, I didn't make them...
There's a cartridge shock (#11) inside of the strut. There's a great big nut above #11 in the drawing, it holds it down inside of the strut, so #11 is actually located inside the strut, the shaft sticking up inside the spring.
Maybe that big nut is loose so the cartridge isn't held in place properly? Maybe the insert itself is bad so the shaft can move sideways?? As you can tell, I'm starting to guess at things that are less likely...
