My valves clatter badly starting at 2000 RPM with no load. I wrote about this a couple of times. I've done some checking since. The engine is freshly rebuilt. I've removed the oil pressure switch and temporarily installed a gauge. Pressure is a uniform 60 psi at idle and higher. Apparently the pressure regulator is working and pump is good. I had a CEL #73 (slow aclimation) and swapping out the O2 sensor (and disconnecting the battery) has cleared it. I took out the distributor mounting bolt (temporarily) and rotated the distributor in both directions (rather than figure out which way retards) and no change in the clatter. (I'm aware that you don't manually set timing on this engine (1995 2.3 NA) but wanted to eliminate the likelihood of detonation as the cause. Since it doesn't require a load to make noise, I didn't much expect anything.
The machine shop changed 4 lifters using a junkyard head (while doing the valve job). Couldn't get 4 of them out without destroying them on my original head. (Cause of rebuild was spun bearing, sludge, and a stripped balance sprocket - - probably the initial cause. Car acquired w175K on it.) Bad lifters is the only thing I think of but if it's a lifter problem, there must be more than one bad. It's quite a clatter. Any ideas from any of you engine experts? I'd appreciate some help. It's my son's car; he helped every step of the way, and I want him to have a good Saab experience. What damage are we doing driving it? Camshaft lobe wear?
