What chemical cleaners have you used in the oil?
What oil are you now using?
How long running this way since rebuild?
Starts ok?
Idles ok?
MPgs?
Power/acceleration ok?
some of the cam shaft bearing bolts are special to allow oil flow and if these are not in the right locations, that would be bad, I would remove the VC and check that out personally, maybe you can run a bit with the VC off and see or hear something useful, I do not know what happens with hydraulic lifters that have air pockets
chain problems would be a buzzing, valve clatter is slower
lifters can be replaced with engine&head in place if needed, I have seen posts that lead me to believe that if some are bad, replace them all as you can't quite know which, but that may not be the case, perhaps others will advise
moving the distributor will do nothing except interfere with the spark distibution with rotor-cap, could mess up if starting that way
