I have been looking for someone local who owns the machine, heard good things about it but have not been able to try it. Preferrable to dumping a quart of Kerosene or Auto Transmission fluid into the engine.
The clatter might be one or both of the chains & chain guides. I believe that is where it is coming from on my car, an independent Saab mechanic has confirmed that. You can inspect the timing chain tensioner, that will tell you if there are issues with the chains.
That noise has partly gone away since I had the balance chain removed (not sure how well that would work on the n/a engine). I was a bit apprehansive, but you can hardly tell the difference.
A used oil analysis (I sent my sample to Blackstone Labs) for around $20 will tell you if there is some other engine damage (in my case, rod bearings).
Even before that, any kind of cleaning seemed to make the engine quieter, I tried both the quickie flushes (Amsoil Engine Flush), and Auto-Rx.
A couple cans of a product called "Ventil-Sauber" from Lubro Moly helped when I had a leaky intake valve - hard to believe, but it cleared up what was measured as almost 80% leakage during a leak-down test.
Whatever flush you try, I would suggest doing at least one quick oil change afterwards, to get any remaining crud and solvent out of the engine.
