Greetings..
I have a 1994 Saab 900S, V6, with auto trans. I'm having transmission trouble, and have no clue where to begin -- this trans is different from the designs I'm used to (although in general, auto transmissions are voodoo magic to me)
Background: about six months ago, the coolant and transmission fluid mixed due to a failure in the radiator. The radiator was fixed, and the transmission fluid drained and replaced.
A couple of weeks ago, car was at stoplight and had been running fine. Stoplight changed to green, and the transmission had disengaged and wouldn't re-engage. The check gearbox light came on -- revving the engine in D didn't do anything but rev the engine. Changing gears wouldn't work -- reverse wouldn't work, etc.
Since then, my diagnosis is confusing to me. I drained the fluid (which was fairly thin -- maybe residual coolant in the transmission?) and put new fluid in. No significant change.
The behaviour that the car is having now is that when you first start the car, it will engage into any gear and will pull strong (brake torquing in D, etc) for about 1 minute. Then it's sort of like a switch gets flipped -- the pull goes away, the transmission wouldn't change gears and is disengaged, and check gearbox comes on.
This leads me to believe that the computer is probably deciding to cut the pressure to the gearshift sections of the tranny, but I have no clue why and no idea where to start. Of course, I'm hoping against hope that theres a way I can fix this without dropping the transmission as it looks like you pretty much have to pull the engine to get the tranny off.
Any help would be appreciated... hitting my head up against a wall here :-(
Thanks,
Joe
