The best way to listen for fuel pump is when cranking the engine.
It is not 100% fool proof that the pump do a priming run every time you turn on the key but it should start every time you crank the engine.
You might have somneone else putting the ear to the tank to listen when you are cranking over.
If you flip the back seat up and open the round cover over fuel tank you will hear more easily.
No, the 4 cyl engines doesn't have an easy fuel pressure port (as the NG900 V6 has). It is a special fuel line adapter that you hook up in line with the existing fuel pressure hose at fuel injector rail. It is a couple of special tricks and tools to get the fuel line open and insert the fuel pressure adapter.
