Saskia,
The A/C can be a real expensive pain to deal with. It could be something as simple as a low charge but you won't know until you do some invesitgation. Get a pressure gauge and take a reading on the low port (next to the battery) with the system on high. Normal would be around 30-35psi. Look to see if the compressor turns on by checking the section inside the AC pulley. Compressors and condensers are expensive so hope it is not one of these.
If the pressure is low and you recharge and then it doesn't last, it's most likely a leak. Use a dye recharge and track it down. Even if you don't do the repairs yourself, you'll save the shop some diagnostic time.
I have a 1997SE and except for AC problems and replacing a fuel pump, it's been pretty reliable but its not like a Honda or Toyota and just keeps running with minimal maintenance. Suspension and other odds and ends start to go at this point so be prepared to invest a little in the car. You'll save a bunch if you can DIY simple things like bakes, rotors, belts, pulleys, coolant, plugs, etc. Stick around because there is a wealth of information on this board. It's helped me out many times.
